Ramsö nature reserve is located in the middle of lake Mien. The island is unique in scandinavia due to the existance of rhyolite rock, formed of hardened lava and ash from an ancient volcano or by a meteor impact. The theories differ on the origin of the crater-shaped lake.
The lake is the deepest in the province of kronoberg with a maximum depth of 43 meters north of Ramsö. The water is clear and nutrient poor. The Rhyolite is to find in several places on the island. The rock has a very dense granular matrix witch contains scattered larger mineral grains.
Ramsö is a geological reserve. The forest is therefore not covered by any specific regulations and parts of the forest has been felled in recent times. The reserve can only be reached by boat and here are not any special arrangements for visitors.
